WhatsApp Rolls Out Bill Payments in India, Taking Aim at UPI Rivals

WhatsApp Rolls Out Bill Payments in India, Taking Aim at UPI Rivals

WhatsApp is adding another everyday utility to its India platform, pushing further into the country’s crowded digital payments space.

The Meta-owned messaging app has officially launched Bill Payments in India, letting users pay electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan bills without leaving the app. The feature runs on the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and connects users to more than 22,700 billers spanning 30 categories.

How It Works

Users can tap the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen to open Bill Payments. From there, they can browse frequently used billers on the home screen or search the full list, view upcoming and past payments, manage multiple accounts under the same provider, and pay using UPI, credit cards or debit cards.

The rollout is gradual and is expected to reach all Android and iOS users across India over the coming weeks.

Why It Matters

The launch continues Meta’s push to turn WhatsApp into a one-stop hub for everyday tasks in India the app already supports mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings and access to government services through chatbots. Meta India’s country head, Arun Srinivas, described the goal as making bill payments on WhatsApp feel as simple as sending a message, while extending digital payment access to more remote parts of the country.

By plugging directly into BBPS, WhatsApp instantly inherits a nationwide billing network rather than having to strike individual deals with each provider the same approach used by rivals like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. That puts WhatsApp in more direct competition with those dedicated payments apps for a slice of India’s day-to-day bill-payment volume.

The timing is notable. It comes weeks after Meta disclosed plans to bring on CRED founder Kunal Shah as WhatsApp’s next global CEO alongside a sizable investment in the fintech company, and as WhatsApp Pay’s own transaction volumes have grown sharply since 2024 even though its overall slice of India’s UPI market still trails the bigger incumbents.
